3 Tips for Better Image Management in WP Make the best out of your WordPress visuals

Whether you are a passionate writer or a professional publisher, WordPress is a godsend for you when it comes to managing textual content. However, it does not matter how well-written your articles are and how beautifully your text looks. It is the visual content which sells the text. Let’s see how to improve it a bit.

1. Don’t let your image become a disadvantage

Many content managers make a mistake when it comes to image management. Some seem to think that if a post contains an image, it is all right. This philosophy is often very harmful and might result in copyright violations, endless loading speed and a clumsily looking website.

There is not too much to explain about basic picture management, but let’s have a quick guide to avoid the most annoying problems.

  • Use quality images. Have yourself a little time to read about colors, compositions and cropping . Keeping a few basic roles in mind makes editing your site far more entertaining and improves its look dramatically.
  • Spend some time on resizing your images. If you need to display a 900*900 px image, resize your original picture close to it, before you upload. We promise it’ll look as fine as you’d upload a 2000*2000 one. However, the larger picture means the bigger amount of data. So if you upload a large image, the browser has to display a 200 Kbs, instead of 20 Kbs, which decreases the speed of browsing dramatically.
  • Many images on the internet are protected by copyright laws. Avoid embarrassment and check the source before you upload anything.

2. Know what you are doing

Src, Title, Alt… Do they sound familiar? Let’s have a closer look on them.

The “scr” tag in the code refers to the source of the image. Most probably what you see will look something like this: src="beautifulpicture.jpg" (or maybe an URL, ending in .jpg or .png in most cases). (In some cases, these attributes are visible only in the source view.)

Title is the tag where you can add a catchy title to your picture. (title=”Very Beautiful Image”).

And there is the mysterious “Alt” tag. This is where you can add an alternative description to you image.

While Src and Title are necessary and HTML code is not willing to work without them, alt tag can be left blank. Does this mean that it is not important? No!

Title and alt allow you to give textual information to your image – which means that Google is able to find them. As search engines are yet unable to search for information about the content of the pictures any other ways, you need to guide them by giving some clues textually.

Title tag shall be short and catchy, like title=”Best shoe”, while alt can be a longer description of the image, e.g.: alt=”The best waterproof shoe for outdoor activities in green color”. Alt tag is a great help for the visually impaired, whose screen-reading software use them to provide them information about the image. This is also a godsend for those who use a text-only browsers. Besides, it is a huge help when technical problems occur – it can be viewed even if you cannot see the image itself.

Tip1: It is worth to optimize the file-name too. If somebody downloads the image, it’ll have a meaningful title like “shoe_from_seashop.jpg”, instead of “001.jpg”.

Tip2: Giving an "alt" title is vital especially when you have an e-commerce WordPress site.

3. Too many images? Create a gallery!

Too many images do not worth to be published individually. You might have a plenty of good images about your product which are worth to show, or you photographed all the phases of your nice DIY project, however, they might ruin the balance of your post.

If your post contains more picture than an average article, consider arranging them into a gallery. Of course there are plug-ins to turn your visuals into a charming online exhibition, but WordPress has a built-in creator too.

It is very easy to create a gallery in WordPress. All you have to do is to click on the “Add Media” button (the one you most probably for use for adding images normally). Then choose the “Create Gallery” option.

Creating a Gallery works in the same way as adding any type of media to WordPress sites. You can add images to your gallery by selecting ones from those that you’ve already uploaded, or you can upload new images from your computer.

After you have the pictures, you can add captions and putting the into the orther you want them to be displayed.

As soon as you are happy with your gallery, you can insert it to your post, similarly to images.

Hint: Galleries do not appear in the visual editor, so do not be afraid when you see only a frame while you edit your article. In code mode you’ll see something like [gallery ids="1,8,6,7,9,5,11,12"].
